Find a food business and check its hygiene rating

Search every food business on the UK food hygiene register by name or by address, or start from a local authority, a chain or a kind of business. The records come from the Food Standards Agency and each local authority that inspects, and they are refreshed here every night. For what a rating means before you go, see checking a business before you eat.

What a search shows you

  • The official food hygiene rating, 0 to 5 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or Pass and Improvement Required under the Food Hygiene Information Scheme in Scotland.
  • The date of the inspection that rating came from. A 5 awarded eight years ago and a 5 awarded last month are both published as a 5, and the date is the part that tells them apart.
  • The three things the inspector scored: hygienic food handling, the cleanliness and condition of the building, and management of food safety.
  • Businesses that have recently left the register, with the history they had while they were on it.

Ratings are a snapshot, not a running score

A rating describes one visit. It is not updated between inspections, and a business is not re-inspected on a fixed timetable - how long it waits depends on its rating and on the local authority's own programme. That is why the rating date matters as much as the number beside it.

Newly registered businesses

A business that has just registered appears on the register before it has been inspected, and is published as awaiting inspection rather than as a low score. Awaiting inspection means nobody has been yet - it is not a rating of zero.
